Elementos para una educación ciudadana: ¿Cómo fomentar una educación democrática e inclusiva?

Educating for citizenship means betting on an education that gives meaning to the educational discourse and at the same time contributes to the construction of a way of living in justice and democracy. The objective of this research is to describe those elements and characteristics that constitute the inclusive democratic classroom. Through a case study design, information on the teaching practices of an elementary school classroom was obtained through interviews, inventories, non-participant observation and documentary analysis. The classroom which constitutes the case study is a 5th grade primary school class attended by 25 students: 14 boys and 11 girls, located in the province of Castellón (Spain). An internship student and the tutor teacher also participated. The triangulation of the information and data processing using the Atlas.ti tool has made it possible to identify the elements of classroom management that favor a more critical citizenship in the school context. The conclusions point to how the teacher starts from the democratic values of justice and equity, recognizes and takes advantage of the diversity present in the classroom and encourages participation and democratic coexistence.
