Background: Acute kidney injury frequently occurs as a complication in 20 30% following open heart surgerypatients; is associated with h igher mortality and prolonged hospital stay. It is typically diagnosed by elevated serumcreatinine or reduced urine output Aim: To explore the incidence and risk factors of acute kidney injury in patients undergoing open heart surgery. Research design: A correlational and prospective research design were patients patients. Setting: The study was conducted in the cardiothoracic surgical intensive care unit at Assiut University Hospital Hospital. Sample: A total of 120 adult patients undergoing open heart surgery were selecte d using a convenience samplingTools, Tool (I): Open heart surgery assessment tool, Tool (II): O ccurrence of acute kidney injury assessment tool,Tool (III): Patient’s outcomes assessment tool of kidney injury in patients undergoing open heart surgery Results: Among the studied patients, 40% of them that developed Acute kidney injury was observed. Astrongly positivecorrelation between acute kidney injury incidence and the was observed occurrence of complications with P valueat p < 0.05)). Conclusion: the Study shows that One of the major complications of open heart surgery is acute kidneyinjury, which tends to affect men more commonly Recommendation: Strict hemodynamic monitoring and importantof renal function test and renal output should be emphasized i n patients undergoing open heart surgery.
