Load‐Bearing Capacity and Failure Mode of L‐Shaped Laminates: The Role of Delamination Defect Location and Fiber Bridging

ABSTRACT Delamination defects in the R‐zone of L‐shaped laminates, difficult to eliminate during manufacturing, compromise structural integrity and complicate performance evaluation. This study investigates the effect of delamination defect location on load‐bearing capacity and failure mechanisms of L‐shaped laminates using four‐point bending tests and a validated cohesive zone model with a modified traction‐separation law. Specimens with four typical defect locations were tested, with delamination initiation and propagation monitored by high‐speed imaging and load–displacement data recorded. Results show that load‐bearing capacity is significantly influenced by the defect location, and all delamination growth initiates from the defect site. While fiber bridging affects the failure mode, its impact on maximum capacity is limited due to a wide high‐stress region in the L‐shaped radius. An envelope diagram illustrates the relationship between defect location and load‐bearing capacity, providing critical insights for damage‐tolerant design of L‐shaped laminates.
