Polypropylene vs. XLPE Cables: Observed Differences Related to Cable Accessories
Polypropylene (PP) cables are considered as a promising alternative to cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cables in high-voltage applications due to their recyclability and reduced carbon footprint. However, the transition from XLPE to PP introduces notable differences in the cable accessory design, installation, and performance. This paper presents differences observed during several of our R&D projects related to AC and DC cable accessories for XLPE and PP cables, along with additional differences reported in existing literature. Specific aspects discussed include variations in surface treatment and grinding processes, challenges in accessory design, insulation recovery in factory joints, and performance discrepancies under low-temperature conditions. By identifying these differences, this study provides valuable insights into the adaptation of existing accessory technologies for PP cables and highlights potential areas for further optimization.
