Considerations for Determining Minimum Setting Depth in Caprock Restoration for CCS Projects
Abstract This study examines the critical considerations for determining the minimum setting depth (MSD) in caprock restoration for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects. It focuses on legacy wells, the associated risks of caprock integrity, and the importance of accurately assessing MSD for effective long-term storage. Key factors, such as pore pressure, fracture gradient, plume migration, and the cooling effect of CO2 injection, are evaluated to ensure safe, sustainable CCS operations. This paper presents a multidisciplinary approach to evaluating MSD, including legacy well analysis, geomechanical modeling, plume migration studies, and operational constraints. Case studies from PETRONAS CCS projects demonstrate how integrated workflows support fit-for-purpose abandonment strategies and long-term containment planning.
