Enhanced Model Predictive Control for Dynamic Frequency Regulation in Grid-Forming Converters
Conventional GFM (Grid-Forming Converters) typically employ dual closed-loop control to regulate voltage and frequency of the power system, with VSG (Virtual Synchronous Generator) in the outer loop and linear control of voltage and current in the inner loop. However, it faces the problem that the response speed enhancement of the output power-frequency loop is contradictory to the steady state performance of the system. To this end, this paper proposes a MPC (Model Predictive Control)-based VSG strategy to optimise the active-frequency control link of the VSG. To enhance the dynamic response of power systems, the control architecture of conventional grid-configured energy storage converters was improved by leveraging the multi-objective optimization features of FCS(Finite-Control-Set)-MPC. Improvements are made to enhance the dynamic response speed as well as the active support capability of the system. Simulation results validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the improvement method.
