Designing an Art and Design Appreciation ELearning Course Using the See-Think-Wonder Thinking Routine and Merrill’s Principles of Instruction

The paper is about the creation of e-learning course on art and design appreciation for product design students of Pelita Harapan University. The study adopts two approaches, the See Think Wonder (STW) from the artful thinking and Merril First Principle of Instruction (FPI). STW is a teaching strategy that guides students to learn about art in three steps: seeing, thinking, and wondering. FPI, on the other hand, is a learning framework that emphasizes a real-world, problem-centered approach, encouraging students to apply new knowledge in real word context. In the study the FPI approach is used to design instructional materials, while STW is used as a teaching strategy in delivering the materials. Both strategies encourage active learning, critical thinking, and a deeper appreciation for art. The study produces a 16-week art and design elearning course that is organized using FPI instructional strategies. Multimedia components and interactive tasks are created using the see think wonder thinking routine to improve the educational experience. The study produces e-learning studying about appreciating painting and design objects. The course duration is for 16 weeks with 9 weeks dedicated to asynchronous learning and 7 weeks to synchronous sessions. To test the effectiveness of elearning, the course was taken by 15 product design students, and they evaluated the course by 3.75. The study found that incorporating STW into the learning materials enhances students’ observation, analytic, and inquiry skills. It is also found that organizing the e-learning content with FPI principle helps students to integrate knowledge into their own contexts. The study is significant to art and design education by showing how the FPI and See Think Wonder thinking routine can be used as key strategies to develop e-learning that enhance students’ learning experience.
