Assessment of multi drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Background: Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are common cause of healthcare-associated infections and hospital outbreaks, predominantly in intensive care units. Prevalence of infections caused by these two pathogens and their presence in hospital, animals, and in the environmental showed alarming data on antimicrobial resistance. The aim of this review article was to expand the understanding of global health risks associated with multidrug resistant A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa. Recent literature survey was conducted using Pubmed database to discuss the multi-drug resistance of A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa. Considerable success of these two pathogens relies on their genomic plasticity, which foster rapid adaptation to stress and adverse environmental conditions. Virulence and multi-drug resistance profile of A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa make them important nosocomial pathogen in the healthcare setting especially in immunocompromised patients. Dissemination of both of these pathogens among patients and long-term contamination of the healthcare settings are encouraged by the ability to develop new antibiotic resistance, which poses a serious threat for public health worldwide. Herein, we described pathogenic characteristics, virulence factors, treatments available, antibiotic resistance, and manifestation. of A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa.
