Study on the Welfare of Pig Farming in Folk Farming in Tompaso District, Minahasa Regency, Indonesia
Animal welfare is an effort that provides suitable environmental conditions for pig farming so that it has an impact on improving the psychology and physiology of pig farming. Healthy environmental conditions for pig farming are carried out to show human concern for animals by increasing the quality of life for pigs confined in cages or kept in pens. In pig farming, implementing animal welfare can mean placing pigs in adequate facilities, protection from pain, and protection from extreme environments, such as air temperatures that are too hot or too cold. In several areas in North Sulawesi, implementing pig welfare does not seem to be a priority. Therefore, research on how to study the welfare of pigs in Tompaso District, Minahasa Regency is considered important to carry out. The research was carried out in Tompaso District, Minahasa Regency. This location was chosen as the research location using the purposive sampling method, namely a data collection technique based on the researcher's considerations. The criteria for farms that meet the requirements are that the community farm (pig farm) has been running for a minimum of 5 years with a minimum number of 5 pigs for each community farm. Observations were carried out using animal welfare standards such as housing, feeding, health and reproduction. A study of the welfare of pigs in Tompaso District shows that people's farms do not sufficiently meet animal welfare standards, and housing management does not meet good housing standards. The feed management implemented can meet the nutritional needs in the form of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals, and water, given ad libitum, so that livestock will not experience dehydration and can meet animal welfare standards. Health management in the form of biosecurity implemented does not meet good standards.
