The Incidence Rate of Scrub Typhus Admission in Intensive Care Unit of Tertiary Care Center: A Retrospective Study
Introduction: Infectious and communicable diseases constitute a substantial cause of morbidity and mortality in developing nations.Scrub typhus is one of the acute febrile illnesses endemic in Asian countries. Its prevalence ranges from 0 to 8% in various parts of India and reported illness ranging from mild to severe disease, even causing to fatality. The current study was conducted to find out the admission rate of scrubpositive cases in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a tertiary care center and its associated fatality rate.Aim: To find out the admission rate of scrub typhus in the ICU and its fatality rate in a tertiary care center.Methodology: All cases admitted to the ICU were reviewed to identify scrub typhus-positive cases. The rate of scrub typhus positive cases was evaluated, and the fatality rate was calculated retrospectively. Results: Scrub typhus seropositivity was found to be higher during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. The incidence of Scrub typhus admissions was found to be 3.14% of all cases admitted in the ICU, and the fatality rate was 4.88% of all ICU mortality. Conclusion: Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for scrub typhus during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, particularly in patients presenting with febrile illness, shock, and multiorgan dysfunction, especially in states with high endemicity.
