AuRh based bimetallic catalyst for electrochemical nitroarene reduction: reaction development and mechanistic insights

This study provides an in-depth examination of the synergistic effects and mechanistic pathways associated with Au₀.₅₀Rh₀.₅₀ bimetallic catalysts in the electrochemical reduction of nitroarenes, which are important precursors in the synthesis of various chemicals and pharmaceuticals. We present evidence that these bimetallic catalysts significantly outperform their monometallic counterparts, demonstrating superior catalytic activity. Through a combination of comprehensive characterization techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), we analyze the structural and electronic properties of the Au₀.₅₀Rh₀.₅₀ system. These characterizations reveal the unique electronic structure of the bimetallic catalyst, which enhances its surface properties, leading to more efficient electron transfer processes during the reduction reaction. Our electrochemical analysis further establishes that the Au₀.₅₀Rh₀.₅₀ bimetallic catalyst achieves an impressive conversion efficiency of 92% and a selectivity of 96% toward the desired target products under carefully optimized reaction conditions. This level of performance suggests that the strategic design of the catalyst can lead to highly selective and efficient chemical transformations. These findings are not only significant for understanding the fundamental mechanisms of bimetallic catalysis but also have important implications for the development of sustainable chemical synthesis methods. By leveraging the advantages of bimetallic systems, we can aim to reduce waste and improve the overall efficiency of chemical processes, aligning with the growing demand for greener and more sustainable industrial practices.
