Achromatic and Wide Field of View Singlet Metalens for Optical Beam Steering

Optical beam steering is a crucial functionality for technologies such as free space optical communication, LiDARs, or virtual reality. While traditional lenses are commonly used in such systems, metalenses, i.e. an assembled array of subwavelngth nanoscatters [1], could represent a great advantage in terms of compactness and system scalability. At the same time, wavelength insensitivity and a wide steering range are sought-after characteristics that can be challenging to achieve with metalenses. Metalens demonstrated in the literature often only demonstrate either achromatic focusing or a wide field of view [2–4]. Metalens doublets have been used to experimentally demonstrate the combination of the two [5], complicating however the fabrication process. Here, we present the design and experimental demonstration of a singlet metalens achieving at the same time achromatic focusing over the 1500 nm – 1600 nm wavelength range and a wide field of view of ±43°, with great potentialities for beam steering applications and beyond.
