Toward New Space Applications and Services: the JRC Testing and Demonstration Hub

This paper provides an overview of the comprehensive testing capabilities for the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) available at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC). In partnership with the Directorate General Defence Industry and Space (DEFIS) and the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA), the JRC supports research and development activities under the EU Space Programme by facilitating testing and demonstration of innovative GNSS technologies and applications. The JRC’s test infrastructure includes a state-of-the art laboratory equipment, which is exploited for the benefit of the EGNOS/Galileo services, including High Accuracy Service (HAS), Open Service Navigation Message Authentication (OSNMA), Safety-of-Life (SoL) service, Timing Service and Space Service Volume. The recent enhancement of the laboratory enables the testing of advanced applications, including precise timing, Controlled Reception Pattern Antennas (CRPA), and LEO-PNT. By offering a robust and reliable testing framework, the JRC aims to stimulate innovation, support the development of novel GNSS-based services and applications, and contribute to the growth of the European space industry, aligning with the EU’s space policy objectives.
