Composite Fibers Made of Glass with Embedded Yb3+ Doped Crystals
Composite glass-based materials embedded with rare-earth (RE) doped crystals are increasingly being explored for a broad spectrum of applications, including lasers, optical amplifiers, and sensors [1]. The incorporation of RE doped crystals into a glass matrix enables precise control over the properties of the RE ions, independent of the composition of the glass host. For example, silica fibers fabricated using an MCVD-compatible process incorporating <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\text{Al}_{2}\mathrm{O}_{3}/\text{Er}$</tex> nanoparticles (NPs) have demonstrated enhanced performance, particularly in achieving improved erbium distribution uniformity along the fiber length at standard doping concentrations [2].
