This research aims (1) to study the charging and discharging behavior of batteries in relation to ambient temperature and (2) to examine the heat generation of batteries under different ambient temperatures. The study was conducted on lithium-ion batteries of types 18650, 21700, and 26650 under charging and discharging rates of 0.5C and 1C while maintaining ambient temperatures at 35°C, 40°C, and 45°C. The objective was to analyze the impact of ambient temperature on battery performance and heat generation. The results indicate that battery capacity tends to increase with higher ambient temperatures due to improved electrochemical reactions within the cells. However, among the tested battery types, the 18650 battery exhibited the lowest capacity, while the 26650 battery demonstrated the highest capacity. Additionally, battery temperature increased with higher ambient temperatures during both charging and discharging processes. Notably, the 21700 battery exhibited higher heat generation compared to other battery types. Furthermore, at a 1C charge/discharge rate, batteries generated more heat than at a 0.5C rate, which could negatively impact battery lifespan over the long term. The findings suggest that ambient temperature and charge/discharge rates significantly affect the temperature and performance of lithium-ion batteries. These factors should be carefully considered when designing cooling systems and selecting batteries for specific environmental conditions. Proper thermal management can help mitigate excessive heat accumulation and extend battery lifespan, enhancing both safety and efficiency in battery applications.
