Thermal Dynamics and Dimensional Heat Dissipation Analysis in Mid-IR Quantum Cascade Lasers

Mid IR quantum cascade lasers attract a lot of interest due to their unique applications. However, the QCL designs require careful engineering to overcome some crucial disadvantages. One of them is the temperature rise of the active region during operation, which significantly affects all laser characteristics, even in the pulsed mode. Earlier works [1], [2] demonstrate that the wavelength chirp can reveal overheating of the QCL active region. In this study, we develop this research further and show that a thermal diffusivity constant α can be derived from the time-resolved emission spectra and used to assess the thermal performance of laser chips.

Abstract

Mid IR quantum cascade lasers attract a lot of interest due to their unique applications. However, the QCL designs require careful engineering to overcome some crucial disadvantages. One of them is the temperature rise of the active region during operation, which significantly affects all laser characteristics, even in the pulsed mode. Earlier works [1], [2] demonstrate that the wavelength chirp can reveal overheating of the QCL active region. In this study, we develop this research further and show that a thermal diffusivity constant α can be derived from the time-resolved emission spectra and used to assess the thermal performance of laser chips.
