First Experimental Observation of Edge Bound State in the Continuum on Silicon Photonic Crystal
A bound state in the continuum (BIC) is an optical mode that exists at a special point of the dispersion diagram above the light line, where leakage radiation is suppressed due to interference [1]. BIC modes possess high Q-factors and highly localized fields in the host structure, which leads to various potential applications, such as lasing, enhancement of nonlinear effects, light modulation, sensing and imaging. BIC modes have been demonstrated in different types of periodic structures, including gratings, photonic crystals, and metasurfaces [1].
