This study aims to determine the heat generated during the charging and discharging of lithium-ion batteries using water as the heat exchange medium and to compare the results with those obtained using a thermostatic chamber. The experiments were conducted at an initial water temperature of 28°C, using two types of lithium-ion batteries: Vapcell F35 18650 and INR 18650-320. The tests were performed at various charge and discharge rates of 0.5C, 1C, and 1.5C. The experimental results showed that the temperature in the system increased continuously with the charge and discharge rates, both when using water and when using the thermostatic chamber. The Vapcell F35 18650 battery was found to release more heat than the INR 18650-320 battery at lower charge and discharge rates. However, at a discharge rate of 1C, the INR 18650-320 battery released more heat. In addition, the heat generated by the water pump operation in the system was minimal and did not vary with different charge or discharge rates. The comparison of results from both methods showed that the heat values were generally similar. Using water as a medium provided effective heat dissipation in environments with water circulation, as water has a high specific heat capacity and can absorb and transfer heat better than air. On the other hand, the thermostatic chamber can provide accurate heat measurements but is less effective in simulating heat transfer compared to water.
