Tm-doped Fibers Manufactured Using Direct Nanoparticle Deposition
When making a fiber, an important task is to incorporate predetermined amount of Tm into the fiber core. With many existing manufacturing technologies, the rare earth incorporation mechanism is quite complex [1]–[3]. To simplify the process, we applied direct nanoparticle deposition (DND) to manufacture Tm-doped fibers. DND enables accurate dopant concentration control, and has been long time applied for Yb and Er fiber manufacturing [4–6]. It is a one-step deposition and doping process where there is no need to remove the soot or preform for doping the active materials in the glass.
