Multimode Imaging with Hollow-Core Fibres

Multimode fibres transmit images via their many spatial modes, enabling endoscopes thinner than coherent fibre bundles [1]–[2]. Hollow-core fibres can guide light at wavelengths where silica glass is opaque or has high loss [3]–[5]. Therefore, multimode hollow-core fibres (MM-HCF) could provide endoscopic imaging at UV or mid-IR wavelengths that are difficult or not possible with solid silica fibres. The experimental techniques for multimode fibre imaging have seen great advances over the last decade, but to our knowledge have not been applied to microstructured MM-HCFs, only metal-coated capillaries [6]. We demonstrate the first steps towards this goal by measuring the transmission matrix [1] of an anti-resonant MM-HCF at a wavelength of 633 nm, and exploring its imaging capabilities in simulations.
