POLITENESS PRINCIPLES OF PAM MILLER IN TOTALLY KILLER MOVIE
This research explored the use of politeness maxims by the character Pam Miller in Totally Killer (2023), using Leech’s (1983) politeness principle theory, which consisted of six politeness maxims, as the theoretical framework. This research aims to identify the types of politeness maxims Pam uses in her interactions and how they reflect her character across different time settings. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the data were collected through observation and transcription of Pam’s dialogues from selected scenes set in both the 1987 and 2023 timelines in the movie. These utterances were then classified and analyzed based on Leech’s six politeness maxims: tact, generosity, approbation, modesty, agreement, and sympathy. The findings show that Pam applies four of the six maxims in varying frequency. The tact maxim is the most dominant with 6 data, followed by the approbation maxim with 5 data, the sympathy maxim with 4 data, and the agreement maxim with 1 data. Meanwhile, the generosity and modesty maxims are not found in the data. These politeness maxims appear consistently in both her teenage and adult versions, indicating continuity in her character over time. The research concludes that Pam’s use of politeness not only shapes her relationships but also enhances the emotional and narrative depth of the movie.
