Full Control of the Electric and Magnetic Light-Matter Interactions through a Nanomirror on a Near-Field Tip
Light-matter interactions are often considered to be mediated by the optical electric field only, discarding the optical magnetic field. Although interactions between light and magnetic dipole (MD) transitions are very weak, they can be studied in a certain class of materials. For instance, it was demonstrated that MD-emission in Eu3+ could be manipulated by tuning the local magnetic quantum environment using dielectric or plasmonic nanostructures [1], [2]. As well, it is possible to manipulate the excitation of the electric and magnetic dipolar transitions (ED and MD) by controlling the electric and magnetic fields' spatial distribution [3], [4].
