Initial optical transmission data suggests that characteristic lines were successfully observed. Further device refinement should yield sufficient laser stability to measure Rb hyperfine transitions for use in miniature atomic clocks.

Abstract

A MEMS-tunable VCSEL was designed as a laser source for Rb D<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">1</inf> transition spectroscopy. Initial optical transmission data suggests that characteristic lines were successfully observed. Further device refinement should yield sufficient laser stability to measure Rb hyperfine transitions for use in miniature atomic clocks.
