Aging of Components Due to Partial Discharge Degradation Mechanisms
The presence of partial discharges (PD) in insulation systems has been a longstanding concern in electrical equipment. This paper investigates the effects of PD on dielectric materials, focusing on both chemical and mechanical degradation mechanisms. Mechanisms of PD activity that lead to molecular bond breaking, microscopic mechanical cracks, and chemical interactions that accelerate material aging are explored through extensive case studies and theoretical analysis. The study high-lights the impact of environmental factors, such as moisture and contaminants, on PD-induced degradation. Understanding these mechanisms provides insights into improving the longevity and reliability of electrical insulation systems.
