Conceptual Design and Theoretical Analysis of an Energy-Efficient Hybrid Passive-Active Wristband for Parkinson's Tremor Suppression
This paper presents an assistive wearable device designed to suppress resting tremors in Parkinson's disease (PD). The wristband integrates a viscoelastic Sorbothane damping layer and piezoelectric actuation to provide complementary vibration attenuation while minimizing power consumption. A multi-sensor array enables real-time discrimination between voluntary motion and tremor. A simplified adaptive control algorithm generates counteracting forces at tremor frequencies (4-6Hz) with minimal computation. Theoretical analysis and simulation results validate that the hybrid design effectively attenuates tremor components without impeding voluntary movements. Compared to existing tremor-management systems, the suggested design offers improved energy efficiency and wearability by combining passive and active damping in a compact form. These results suggest the wristband's potential as a practical assistive solution for daily-life tremor mitigation in PD patients.
