ASAM issues policy — again — on methadone

This month the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) yet again called upon the federal administration to allow office‐based prescribing of methadone for opioid use disorder (OUD). For years, ASAM has tried to wrest methadone treatment from the exclusive purview of Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs), the only providers allowed under federal law to dispense methadone for OUD. These are also the only providers with any history of or experience in treating OUD with methadone.

Abstract

For years, ASAM has tried to wrest methadone treatment from the exclusive purview of Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs), the only providers allowed under federal law to dispense methadone for OUD.
