Synthesis of Nanoscale Zero Valent Iron Particles and Their Application in Aquatic Chemistry Study

In order to introduce the concepts of aquatic chemistry, a series of lab-scale experiments using nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) as a medium were designed for junior/senior undergraduate and graduate students majoring in environmental science. Based on our teaching experience, nZVI was an ideal material for instructing fundamental concepts and principles in aquatic chemistry, given its ease of operation and observable efficiency. The students synthesized nZVI by chemical reduction methods under the instructor’s guidance. They then characterized the nanoparticles using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and infrared spectroscopy to determine surface area, morphology, size distribution, and surface composition. Moreover, the concepts of zeta potential (ξ), iso-electric point, solution oxidation–reduction potential (Eh), and pH were effectively measured based on the reactions of nZVI with water. Through the experiment of removing Cu(II) from water using nZVI, students explored the roles of adsorption, redox reactions, and pH changes in pollutant removal. Further, this experiment helped students understand and apply aquatic chemistry knowledge in practical scenarios so as to achieve the goal of applying theoretical knowledge in practical situations. The simple iron material offered a dynamic tool to learn amazing aquatic chemistry.
