Empathy-Driven Innovation: Human-Centered Design Thinking for Transforming Healthcare Delivery
This discussion addresses the persistent challenge of Emergency Department (ED) boarding - prolonged patient stays in the ED while awaiting inpatient placement - and its impacts on individuals of low socioeconomic status, medically-complex older adults, and patients with psychiatric conditions. We propose Patient Navigators, Community Paramedicine programs, and EmPATH units as evidence-based solutions to mitigate boarding harms without large-scale policy reform or infrastructure expansion. Each model has demonstrated effectiveness in improving patient outcomes, reducing hospital readmissions, and alleviating ED burden. This discussion is well-suited for Conduct Science Journal’s Public Health and Translational Research Special Issue, as the authors focus on emergency medicine, health equity, and systems-level healthcare improvement.
