Contemporary Work Design & Ergonomics Education Theory and Practice
At Rutgers University, the Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) program is adapting to demands for graduates skilled in current trends like work design, ergonomics, and human-centered design. This paper outlines our initiative to revamp the Work Design and Ergonomics (WD&E) course and lab, elevating it to a dynamic, technology-rich first engineering course infused with Project-Based Learning (PBL). The course now effectively combines traditional industrial engineering principles with a strong emphasis on the human elements of engineering, offering students a comprehensive, engaging educational experience. These enhancements not only align with program objectives but also position the course at the cutting edge of modern work design and ergonomic education, fostering a generation of engineers who are both knowledgeable and passionate about their field.
