Beyond Limits: Unleashing Industrial and Systems Engineering and AI for Swift, Inclusive Solutions to Global Sustainability Challenges
This study revisits the 1972 work, The Limits to Growth, wherein systems engineers played a pivotal role in establishing the foundations of the sustainability movement, emphasizing the urgent need for immediate action to prevent enduring environmental repercussions. Despite widespread recognition of human-induced climate change, recent reports show insufficient progress in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. This research explores the potential for Industrial and Systems Engineers (ISEs) to re-enter this space and leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) to transform processes and achieve the vision articulated by our predecessors half a century ago: achieving "ecological and economic stability that is sustainable far into the future." The problem statement addresses complexities in current sustainability frameworks, proposing the integration of systems thinking, ISE skills, and AI to accelerate climate change mitigation. The methodology includes an AI-enabled literature review, surveys of Chief Sustainability Officers (CSOs), and interviews. Initial findings suggest that ISEs leveraging AI can revolutionize the provision of sustainability services. Making these services holistic, cost-effective, and efficient would make them accessible to smaller organizations and expedite the achievement of GHG reduction and other Sustainable Development Goals.
