In the face of rising concern about AI-generated content and its legitimacy in scholarly discourse, this essay revisits the classical Chinese philosophical distinction between Dao (the Way) and Qi (the Instrument). Drawing from the traditions of Laozi and Zhuangzi, we argue that tools—be they bronze, pen, or machine learning models—are ethically neutral. It is the intent, vision, and insight of the human mind that gives meaning to any creation. AI, like the telescope in Galileo's time or the microscope in Hooke's, is merely a vessel; the true value lies in the "Way" it serves. Rejecting AI for its synthetic form is akin to rejecting the brush for not being the calligrapher. This perspective not only challenges emerging biases against AI-assisted research but also restores focus to the deeper source of knowledge: the conscious, reflective, and creative human spirit.
