Sebos, Leitura e Produção de Sentidos

The research is based on the premise that the second-hand bookshops in the Historic Center of Manaus produce meaning for the population through organization and access to information. The main objective of the study was formalized through the investigation of aspects of information processing and retrieval in parallel with the cultural potential of second-hand bookshops in Manaus. To this end, the second-hand bookshops in this location were mapped, the process of organizing the collections of the second-hand bookshops was identified, and the potential for the production of meaning inherent in these spaces was exposed. Methodologically, the use of the semiotic method was prioritized, from an exploratory-descriptive perspective, and under a qualitative approach that took into account the postulates of the Soviet branch of semiotics, which deals specifically with culture. The results point to an elucidation of the processing of information and the cultural potential inherent in the practices of the second-hand bookshops, from the aspects of reading to the organization of information, which in turn follows its own logic when compared to the rules established in the field of Library Science. In view of this, it can be inferred that second-hand bookshops can be set as a parallel of convergence between knowledge and culture, producing meanings in the taste for reading in the city of Manaus.
