Enhancing drop landing mechanics in soccer players: The impact of Kinesio taping on hip abductors

ABSTRACT Background: Kinesio taping has become popular in sports for its purported benefits in injury prevention and performance enhancement. The technique involves applying a special tape to facilitate natural healing processes while maintaining the range of motion. The effects are theorized to involve improved circulation and activation of mechanoreceptors in the skin. Objective: This experimental study aimed to investigate the effects of Kinesio taping on drop landing mechanics in soccer players, particularly focusing on hip abductor muscles. Materials and Methods: Eighty male and female soccer players participated. Various assessments, including video drop jump tests and electromyography, were conducted before and after Kinesio taping application on hip abductors. Results: Significant improvements were observed in drop landing mechanics after the application of Kinesio taping. Knee and ankle separation distances increased during the landing and take-off phases (P < 0.001). Electromyographic (EMG) activity of Gluteus medius and tensor fascia latae also increased significantly (P < 0.05) after taping. The running gait demonstrated elevated EMG activity without notable alterations in temporospatial parameters. Discussion: The findings support the notion that Kinesio taping affects neuromuscular control and joint alignment during dynamic movements like drop landings. Increased muscle activation and corrected joint positions suggest potential benefits in injury prevention and performance enhancement. Conclusion: Short-term application of Kinesio taping on hip abductors leads to significant improvements in drop landing mechanics among soccer players. This suggests its potential utility in enhancing athletic performance and reducing injury risk during dynamic tasks. Further research is warranted to explore its long-term effects and applicability in various sporting contexts.
