Powering Sustainability: Investigating Energy Efficiency and Emissions in India's IT Sector
India's Information Technology (IT) sector is one of the global leaders in providing Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES) and Software Development Services. Over the last three decades, IT as a sector, has gained a prominent position in India's economic growth success story. However, the IT sector creates significant environmental problems and challenges from its energy-intensive <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$24 / 7$</tex> operations with substantial carbon emissions, which can be attributed to the size and operational income of the firms in this sector. The larger growth contribution could also mean substantial energy consumption and carbon emissions. This paper examines the correlation between operational income, energy, and emissions intensity in Indian IT firms using published data from the Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR) reports for 2023 and 2024. The study develops a statistical model to analyze and discover key insights. The findings reveal the diversity in financial performance, operational scale, and sustainability measures across listed IT companies in India. These results underline the need for enhanced energy efficiency and better emission management to achieve better financial performance. The study also recommends that companies pursue green IT with focused investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy. The study provides actionable insights for policymakers and industry leaders. With the combination of descriptive, correlational, and regression analysis academia can better understand the complex relationship between financial and environmental metrics which can be beneficial for future studies
