Design and Analysis of a Unique Compact UWB Antenna for High Data Rate Applications

This work is proposed to design a compact unique shaped antenna of size <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$35 \times 30 \times 1.6 \text{mm}^{3}$</tex>. The designed antenna radiates in 2.96 GHz to 10.6 GHz band (i.e. little beyond UWB frequency range of 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz). The limited ground plane is optimized to get the desired UWB range. The proposed geometry is created on FR4 dielectric substrate using Ansys HFSS 15.0. The radiation patterns are found to be highly directional in E-plane as well as H-plane. The distribution of the surface current through the antenna is analysed with the surface current density at all the resonant frequencies. The proposed antenna provides the mean gain of 4 dB which is fine in regards to the antenna dimensions. The proposed research has novelty in the respect that it presents a novel geometry with least patch area for UWB applications. The proposed antenna is useful for the various high-data rate applications in the UWB range.
