Ergodic Capacity Analysis of Free Space Optical Communication

This paper investigates the ergodic capacity of freespace optical communication when the channel suffers atmospheric turbulence. By choosing a practical fading channel model, and extending existing capacity results of nonfading channels, we have derived new lower and upper bounds on ergodic capacity. Numerical results show that derived upper and lower bounds are fairly close, thus verifying their accuracy on estimating the ergodic capacity.

Abstract

This paper investigates the ergodic capacity of freespace optical communication when the channel suffers atmospheric turbulence. By choosing a practical fading channel model, and extending existing capacity results of nonfading channels, we have derived new lower and upper bounds on ergodic capacity. Numerical results show that derived upper and lower bounds are fairly close, thus verifying their accuracy on estimating the ergodic capacity.
