Reliable and Trustworthy AI for Drone Operations

This paper presents a novel framework for enhancing the reliability and trustworthiness of artificial intelligence (AI) systems in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarms. Our research addresses critical challenges in autonomous drone operations, including safety assurance, decision transparency, and operational efficiency in complex environments. The proposed multi-level architecture integrates three key innovations: (1) a hierarchical decision-making system that maintains operational reliability even during component failures, (2) a self-healing mechanism using ensemble methods that reduced system downtime in our tests, and (3) an explainable AI module that provides real-time justification for critical decisions with high accuracy. Experimental results demonstrate improvement in processing speed using Intel oneDNN-optimized TensorFlow, while maintaining high accuracy in semantic segmentation for safe landing area identification. Our framework has been validated across various UAV types, including quadcopters and fixed-wing drones, showing effectiveness in urban surveillance and emergency response scenarios. This work contributes to the field by establishing quantifiable metrics for AI reliability in drone operations and providing a comprehensive methodology for developing trustworthy autonomous systems.
