Google Earth Engine Based Web Application for Flood Monitoring with Region and Time Frame Customization

Flood monitoring and analysis are essential for managing and mitigating the impacts of floods by providing early warnings and predictive alerts, enabling timely evacuations, and preparation and reducing casualties. But challenges such as the prohibitively expensive and sophisticated nature of monitoring devices, impaired communication lines during severe weather, and limited historical records limit effective flood analysis. Google Earth Engine (GEE), a cloud-computing system, overcomes these challenges through provision of access to vast satellite imagery, integrate various datasets, and offer automated workflows and extensive analyses. This work introduces the development of a web tool based on GEE for Indian river basins flood monitoring using Sentinel and MODIS satellite data. The proposed web application intended to optimize data processing for specific regions to perform the flood analysis by selecting appropriate satellites, methods, and algorithms within a specified time frame that provides real-time insights of flood dynamics. It facilitates decision-making for authorities and policymakers by with actionable data for rescue operations, infrastructure planning, and flood management policy.
