The Future of E-Learning: Video Summarization Techniques for Enhancing Learning Outcomes

The COVID-19 pandemic unexpectedly accelerated the adoption of e-learning and caused a surge in educational videos across various platforms like YouTube, edX, Coursera, etc. These videos are often lengthy in nature and pose challenges for learners in terms of efficient consumption, information retention, and subsequently, decreased attention span. Video summarization techniques offer a crucial solution by providing users concise summaries without losing key information. Moreover, it enables digital note-making. This review paper delves into the work done in this domain, examining advancements, challenges and potential avenues for improvement. Furthermore, this review will investigate the available datasets and evaluation metrics that have commonly been used in educational video summarization. This will provide a valuable benchmark for researchers to compare their methods and track progress in the field. Despite considerable advancement in this discipline, a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art employed remains elusive. Ultimately, this study aims to set the stage for researchers and educators by providing an assimilation of important milestones achieved in this work area, identifying research gaps, and examining the scope of improvement in this focal point of research that is set to transform the coming years.
