Open Source Technology Stack for IIoT: A Case Study for the Renewable Energy Industry

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has significantly transformed many industries, including critical ones like power generation. By connecting actuators, sensors, and various smart devices through a network, IIoT generates extensive data, allowing to gain exceptional insights into operations based on its processing and make justified, data-driven decisions. Another important aspect is the technology stack used in modern IIoT: different industries gradually move from expensive proprietary supervisory control and data (SCADA) systems to open source solutions. This study discusses developing an IIoT framework using an open source technology stack. The method used in this research is iterative development using Telegraf for data collection, InfluxDB for data storage and processing, Node-RED for wiring components together, and Grafana for real-time visualization and control. Special emphasis is given to possible security issues on all levels. A case study for the renewable energy generation industry is provided.
