Design Methodology for Implementing an Offshore Operations Simulation Center
Abstract In the offshore industry, there is a trend towards implementing remote control systems, which offer advantages in terms of costs and integration of onshore teams into the decision-making process. However, despite the benefits, this new paradigm also brings with it unprecedented situations, with a high degree of uncertainty. In this context, an offshore remote operations simulation center can be of great value, supporting the development and updating of quantitative prospective models for analyzing human reliability and the risk associated with the operation of the system. Supported by data collected in the simulator, these models can help identify the main factors that influence human performance and operational risk. In addition, systems to be implemented in the future can be extensively tested and improved during the design phase of their projects, before commissioning, and risk reduction measures can be identified and implemented proactively, reducing the likelihood of events that are harmful to the operator’s image, assets, the environment and, most importantly, human life. This paper discusses a proposed design methodology for implementing an offshore operations simulation center with these characteristics.
