Wave Power Extraction From Semi-Submersible Hybrid Platforms With Multi-Physics and High-Fidelity Simulations Powered by SPH
Abstract A hybrid floating offshore wave&wind platform configuration is investigated in its most relevant operational state accounting for wave power: turbine shut-down. Three Wavestar devices accommodate radially around an OC4-compliant DeepCwind platform; code comparison is performed between a reference solution provided by a highly-functional Ansys-AQWA–OpenFAST and the proposed fully coupled CFD-based DualSPHysics simulation software with MoorDynPlus and Chrono. After careful validations and code comparison, the presented work suggests that high-fidelity models can predict higher power performance for point absorbers cast into multi-modal motion environments. For the investigated power unit, up to 15% more mechanical rated power is predicted across a frequency range 4 times as wide.
