Effects of Yaw Rotation Correction on Hydrodynamic Loads and Dynamic Response of a Floating Wind Turbine

Abstract Boundary Element Method (BEM) hydrodynamic calculations based on linear potential flow modeling are typically valid for small platform motions. However, large platform motions can occur in systems such as Single Point Mooring (SPM) or during mooring system failures, such as a mooring line rupture. This paper aims to describe the implementation and verification of a correction for calculating BEM hydrodynamic load components under large yaw rotation. The VolurnUS-S platform was analyzed in extreme load case for two scenarios: intact mooring system and mooring system failure with one broken mooring line. Results from the ultimate load analysis highlight that the yaw rotation correction significantly influences tower bottom loads and nacelle accelerations in the mooring system failure scenario.
