A New Interface Friction Simulation Method for Installation Analysis of Dynamic Installed Anchors

Abstract The successful installation of dynamically installed anchors (DIA) is crucial for their performance. Simulating the DIA installation process using accurate numerical techniques provides valuable guidance for engineering design. The Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) method, available in the commercial software ABAQUS, is well-suited for solving 3D boundary value problems with complex geometries. It is one of the most widely used methods for modeling DIA installation. However, the side wall friction cannot be modelled accurately in soil with linearly increasing undrained shear strength as the shear strength related friction limit should be set in advance in the existing modelling technique, which made the analysis of DIA installation resistance and embedment depth a challenge in time cost and accuracy. In this work, a new interface friction simulation method named advanced general contact method was proposed to solve the above problems of current interface friction model. The main features of this model are that the installation of DIA is completed by iteration and the analysis step in each iteration is divided into several sub-steps with different shear stress limit in each sub-steps. The results show that the advanced general contact method can predict accurately the embedment depth of DIAs in soil with linearly increasing undrained shear strength when compared to the field test data. The accuracy of the proposed method are higher than the general contact method and the reaction force method. The proposed method in this study demonstrates higher computational efficiency compared to the traditional general contact method when the tolerant iteration error is set at 35%.
