Multi-Source Heterogeneous Database of Excavated Earthworks During Offshore Canal Construction: Pinglu Canal Case

Abstract Pinglu Canal, as the longest offshore canal project in Asia since 21st century, is an 140 km-water bridge linking Qinjiang River and Beibu Gulf in southwestern China. During the construction, 389 million m3 of earthworks including 52.3% of fine-grained soils (e.g., silt, clay, and mudstone), 38.8% of coarse-grained soils (e.g., fine sands and coarse sands), and 8.9% of soft rocks (e.g., sandstones and mudstones) were generated. Considering their different engineering characteristics and resource attributes, a big database with in-situ rapid detection indices of earthworks is the premise for efficient large-capacity reuse of these earth materials. After one-month data collection, a multi-source heterogeneous database with 1,000 groups of data was proposed. For soils, here we present images, consistency limits, cohesion, compression modulus, internal friction angle, and free expansion rate. For rocks, here we present images, rebound indices, water absorption capacity, compressive strength, strength softening coefficient, and so on. These data include imaging data, discrete numerical data, and textual non-numerical data. The database provides rich samples and comprehensive data types for geotechnical research in offshore engineering.
