How to report personalized Internet- and mobile- based intervention components: Introducing the ADAPT-I checklist

Personalization of various Internet- and mobile-based intervention (IMI) components is common, but inconsistent terminology and selective reporting hinder research and practice. This paper introduces the Adjustable Content & Order, Direct clinical guidance, Alerts (Reminders and Communication/alerts), and Presentation Style and Tailored User Interaction in IMI (ADAPT-I) checklist. We developed ADAPT-I through an iterative, multistep process that included literature reviews, expert focus groups, and multiple rounds of revision and piloting. The final checklist was implemented in a web-based interactive application for enhanced applicability. The ADAPT-I checklist supports detailed reporting of what IMI components are personalized, on what basis, and through which decision agents. By enhancing intentionality in intervention design and transparency in reporting, ADAPT-I serves as a valuable tool for both researchers and developers of IMIs.
