Rendering of ergonyms in Russian translation studies – an overview

The ways of translating proper names in general and ergonyms in particular have changed over time. These changes, however, did not occur as a result of agreement among translators and scholars, but, like many changes in language, happened spontaneously. The authors of the article analyze the recommendations for rendering ergonyms presented in the works by translation scholars. Thus, the aim of the article is to create a comprehensive understanding of how the practices regarding this group of proper names have been developing. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the fact that, for the first time, changes in the methods of dealing with proper names have become the focus of researchers’ interest, allowing for the identification and comprehension of new trends in this area. The results showed that despite the common belief that proper names are easy to convey, there were many factors that influenced approaches to dealing with ergonyms. This research deepens the understanding of the functioning of ergonyms within the framework of translation studies over an extended historical period.
