Intentional dating: A framework for sustaining erotic vitality in long-term relationships
The paradox of sexual desire in long-term relationships is that while intimacy deepens, erotic vitality often declines. Research links this decline to habituation, lack of novelty, and insufficient intentional effort. This paper introduces intentional dating, a structured framework designed to counteract these challenges. Grounded in established theories—Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985), the Dual Control Model (Bancroft & Janssen, 2000), and Self-Expansion Theory (Aron & Aron, 1986)—it emphasizes agency, competence, and attunement (autonomy, competence, relatedness) as drivers of sustained desire. The program applies a four-part structure across eight sequential dates, fostering reflection, playful exploration, communication, and erotic growth. By translating theory into practice, intentional dating provides couples with repeatable skills to cultivate anticipation, deepen intimacy, and sustain desire over time.
