Hidradenitis suppurativa and psychiatric disease: the need for nuanced analysis

This letter highlights key methodological limitations in the meta-analysis by Folkmann et al. on hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and psychiatric disease. We emphasize the need to control for inflammatory bowel disease, address sociodemographic confounders, adopt more dynamic severity measures and explore sex-based differences. Addressing these gaps will enhance the interpretability and clinical applicability of future HS–psychiatric comorbidity research.

Abstract

This letter highlights key methodological limitations in the meta-analysis by Folkmann et al. on hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and psychiatric disease. We emphasize the need to control for inflammatory bowel disease, address sociodemographic confounders, adopt more dynamic severity measures and explore sex-based differences. Addressing these gaps will enhance the interpretability and clinical applicability of future HS–psychiatric comorbidity research.
