Empowering Learners through Self-Assessment: Fostering Responsibility and Motivation

This paper will explore the role of self-assessment practices in empowering the learner by improving their motivation towards academics and promoting a responsible and owning approach towards the educational experience.Self-assessment of learners is an innovative teaching method that enables the student to be a participant throughout his education.Reflective thinking makes students metacognitive and critically thinking as well as intrinsically driven towards learning skills that are instrumental to their lifelong learning. The transformation of the traditional evaluation process to self-assessment in which students are being evaluated performs in correlation to modern educational objectives, which promote learner modulation, flexibility, and self-rule.The quantitative research design was embraced where 120 students were the participants between the ages of 15 to 18.The questionnaire used was a structured questionnaire in which data were gathered on a Likert scale.Statistical analysis was done by using SPSS 22.0 not only by conducting a frequency and percentage test on the demographic profiling but also by conducting regression analysis on the relationships among variables, namely self-assessment practices, academic motivation and responsibility/ ownership of learning. The findings indicated a small but substantial relationship between self-assessment and responsibility/ownership of learning (R 2 = 0.293) and a large positive correlation between academic motivation and self-assessment practices (R 2 = 0.667).The theoretical foundation that self-assessment promotes greater engagement, individual accountability, and learner autonomy is supported by these data.According to the study, peer cooperation and teacher feedback are two further elements that might improve self-assessment results. The results confirm that self-assessment is an essential instrument for encouraging learners who are driven, accountable, and self-directed.Its incorporation into routine classroom procedures can provide more efficient, individualized, and empowered learning opportunities.
